Whole Garment - What is it?

The Difference Between Hand Knitting and WholeGarment Machine Knitting

If you’ve ever seen “gauge” on a knitwear label and wondered what it really means—here’s a simple, friendly guide to how gauge works in hand knitting vs. WholeGarment machine knitting, and the gauges we use at NZ Charly.

What is Gauge in Knitting?

Gauge is the number of stitches (and rows) within a fixed area, typically per inch or per 10 cm. It helps describe how fine, dense, or airy a knitted fabric will be.

In Hand Knitting

Hand-knitting gauge is measured by how many stitches and rows fit into a 10×10 cm swatch. It depends on yarn weight, needle size, and personal tension.

  • Thick yarn + larger needles → fewer stitches per inch (a chunkier, airier knit).
  • Thin yarn + smaller needles → more stitches per inch (a finer, denser knit).

Most yarn labels suggest a needle size and an expected gauge range to help you match your project.

In Machine Knitting (Like Ours)

For WholeGarment machine knitting, “machine gauge” refers to how many needles sit within an inch across the needle bed. A higher machine gauge has more needles per inch and produces finer fabric; a lower machine gauge has fewer needles and produces a chunkier fabric.

Our seamless method precisely matches yarn to machine gauge, giving consistent results with beautiful drape and minimal waste.

The Gauges We Use at NZ Charly

We knit everything using seamless, low‑waste techniques that remove bulky seams and avoid fabric cutting. Two core yarn counts power most of our collection:

  • 2/18 NM yarn — Typically knitted around 7–10 gauge for comfortable, mid‑weight jumpers. Great for cooler months and everyday warmth without bulk.
  • 2/28 NM yarn — Typically knitted around 12–18 gauge for feather‑light, fine‑gauge layers. Soft on skin, elegant drape, and perfect for year‑round wear.

Why It Matters

Understanding gauge helps you pick the right knit for your lifestyle: finer gauges excel at softness, drape, and layering; mid‑gauges balance warmth and breathability. Our seamless approach keeps waste low and comfort high—no cut‑and‑sew, just intelligently engineered knitwear designed to last.
