Caring for Your Knitwear: A Slow Fashion Guide
At NZ Charly, we believe in the principles of slow fashion — creating garments that are timeless in design and built to last. But even the most luxurious fibres need a little love and care to keep looking (and feeling) their best.
Whether you’re new to knitwear or have a wardrobe full of it, these simple steps will help you get the most out of your NZ-made merino, possum, cashmere, and silk blends.
🧼 Washing Your Knitwear
- Hand wash in cool or room temperature water using a gentle wool-grade detergent.
- Avoid fabric softeners — they coat fibres, flattening the natural structure and reducing longevity.
- Do not rub the garment when washing. This is one of the most common causes of pilling.
🚫 What to Avoid
- Do not iron. The heat will crush fibres and remove that soft, snuggly texture.
- No tumble-drying or bleaching. These can severely damage the garment and reduce its lifespan.
💨 Freshen with Steam
To remove wrinkles or odours, gently steam your knitwear instead of ironing. This method refreshes the fibres while preserving softness.
🧺 Storage Tips
- Fold your garments instead of hanging them to prevent stretching or distortion.
- Use our moth-repelling cedar blocks to keep your knitwear safe from moths naturally.
- Keep away from jewellery or sharp items that may snag the delicate fibres.
