Care Guide for Ceramics
Caring for NZ Charly Ceramics
Handwashing with mild soap is best to protect glazes from harsh dishwasher detergents, though pieces are often dishwasher and microwave safe. Avoid extreme temperature changes (thermal shock), use soft cloths or sponges, and protect surfaces from scratches. These handmade items are durable but benefit from gentle care to maintain their unique finish.
Washing & Cleaning
- Handwash Recommended: Use warm water, mild soap, and a soft sponge to preserve glaze and finish.
- Dishwasher/Microwave: Many pieces are safe, but harsh cycles can dull finishes; handwashing is gentler for longevity.
- Stubborn Food: Soak in lukewarm water, then gently scrub with a plastic scrubber (not metal).
- Stains: Use non-abrasive cream cleaners with a soft sponge.
Temperature Care
- Avoid Thermal Shock: Do not move items from freezer to hot oven or vice versa; allow gradual temperature adjustment (e.g., warm water in a hot mug first).
Handling & Storage
- Protect Surfaces: Use coasters, as unglazed bottoms can scratch delicate surfaces.
- Stacking: Place soft cloth or paper towel between stacked items to prevent chipping.
- Dust: Gently dust with a soft, lint-free cloth.
General Tips
- Enjoy Them! Handmade ceramics are meant for daily use, not just display.
- Embrace Imperfections: Small variations are part of the charm of handmade items.
