WholeGarment knitting is a technology that produces a complete, fully shaped, seamless garment in a single automated process. No panels are cut and sewn together. No fabric is trimmed and discarded. The finished piece comes off the machine ready to wear, with nothing wasted. It is the most technically advanced method of producing knitwear that currently exists, and it is the method used for every NZ Charly piece.


The difference between WholeGarment and conventional knitwear

To understand what WholeGarment technology does, it helps to understand how knitwear has traditionally been made. Conventional machine knitwear, even from premium brands, is typically produced as flat fabric panels: a front, a back, two sleeves. These panels are then cut to shape and sewn or linked together by hand or machine. The cutting and joining process generates yarn waste, and the seams create pressure points that can cause discomfort and wear over time.

Even what is called seamless knitwear in the mainstream market is often not truly seamless. Many pieces described as seamless are knitted in tubes with some shaping, then cut and finished. The term is used loosely in the industry, and the products it describes vary significantly in quality and construction.

WholeGarment is different in a specific and verifiable way. The garment is knitted in three dimensions, in the round, with shaping built into the structure of the knit itself. The machine works on multiple needle beds simultaneously, forming the body and sleeves as a single interconnected piece. When it comes off the machine, it is a complete garment. No panels. No joining. No off-cuts.

A WholeGarment piece is not assembled. It is grown, stitch by stitch, as a single continuous structure.

The Shima Seiki machines behind the technology

WholeGarment is a registered technology developed by Shima Seiki, a Japanese manufacturer that has been producing knitting machines since 1962. The company introduced the first WholeGarment knitting machine in 1995 after years of research and development. The machines use a system of multiple needle beds and a sophisticated yarn carrier arrangement that allows the machine to knit in all directions simultaneously, creating three-dimensional structure directly in the fabric.

Shima Seiki machines are precision engineering at an extraordinary level. Each needle is independently controlled by computer. The tension, the stitch structure, the shaping, and the yarn selection can all be varied at any point in the garment. A designer working with WholeGarment technology specifies the garment digitally, and the machine executes it with a precision that no hand process could match at scale.

New Zealand has a small number of operators with WholeGarment capability. It is not cheap technology to acquire or to run. It requires skilled technicians who understand both the programming and the mechanical operation of the machines, as well as the specific behaviour of the yarns being used. This is part of why New Zealand luxury knitwear made using this technology is genuinely rare.

Why seamless construction produces a better garment

The absence of seams in a WholeGarment piece is not simply an aesthetic choice. It has real consequences for how the garment feels, fits, and lasts.

Seams create ridges and pressure points. On the shoulder, under the arm, across the back, these can cause irritation during wear, especially for people with sensitive skin or those wearing a garment close to the body. A seamless garment eliminates these points entirely. The fabric drapes and moves as a single piece, following the body without interruption.

Seams are also structural weak points. Over time, the thread holding panels together can stretch, break, or develop tension imbalances that distort the garment's shape. In a WholeGarment piece, the entire structure is one continuous interlocked system. There is nothing to come apart in the same way. This contributes to the exceptional longevity of well-made WholeGarment knitwear.

The fit of a WholeGarment piece is also more refined than conventionally constructed knitwear. Because shaping is built into the knit structure itself rather than achieved through cutting, the contours are smoother and more precise. Armhole shaping, neck lines, sleeve tapers: all of these are part of the knitted structure rather than the result of how panels are joined.

Zero waste: what it actually means

The fashion industry generates an enormous volume of pre-consumer textile waste, fabric and yarn discarded during the manufacturing process before a garment ever reaches a customer. Conservative estimates suggest that cutting room waste alone accounts for 15 to 20 percent of total fabric in conventional garment production. For a global industry producing billions of garments annually, this is an almost incomprehensible volume of material sent to landfill or incineration.

WholeGarment knitting eliminates this category of waste entirely. There is nothing to cut. There are no off-cuts. The yarn goes in and the garment comes out. The only yarn loss is the small amount used in the initial setup of each piece, which is a fraction of what conventional construction wastes.

This is not a small thing. When we say our garments are made with zero-waste technology, we mean it in a precise and verifiable sense. The process produces no pre-consumer textile waste. Combined with natural fibres that are biodegradable at end of life, it creates a production model that is significantly lower impact than most alternatives available in the luxury knitwear market.

Design and programming The garment is designed digitally, specifying stitch structure, shaping, yarn selection, and dimensions. This digital pattern drives the machine directly.

Yarn preparation Natural fibre yarns, in our case possum merino, ZQ merino, cashmere, and silk, are loaded onto the machine. Yarn quality directly affects the finished result.

Three-dimensional knitting The Shima Seiki machine knits simultaneously on multiple needle beds, building the garment in three dimensions. Body, sleeves, and all shaping form as one continuous piece.

Off the machine The finished garment comes off the machine complete. No panels. No cutting. No seam finishing. Just a whole garment, ready for the next stage.

Finishing and quality check Each piece is steamed, checked, and inspected by hand before it is packed and sent to you. This is where human craft meets technological precision.

Why we would not make it any other way

Charlotte chose WholeGarment technology for NZ Charly before the brand existed in its current form. She had made garments both ways and there was no comparison. The finish, the fit, the longevity, and the absence of waste made it the only approach that matched what she was trying to build: something genuinely excellent, made with as little negative impact as possible.
